Around the years, The Beatles were hanging out in Rishikesh, The Doors and Jimmie Hendrix were inspired by Morocco. The Anjuna Jam Band chose the beaches of Goa as their place to settle. They were totally unaware at that point in time that they were making history and are significant trail blazers. What they have started naturally, will become a movement that will snowball, expand, and evolve. What started as a rock band, was the foundations of a huge global phenomena that initiated as psychedelic rock, and transformed into a scene that will cross borders and become a worldwide intercontinental psytrance movement.
The Anjuna Jam Band was one of the main bands of the Live Music Scene that flourished in Goa from around 1974 until the beginning of the 1980s. Many great musicians would show up in Goa, and many played in the Anjuna Jam Band, joining the core group of regular musicians who would come to Goa every season and who were the backbone of the Band, and the Goa Live Music Scene of that era.
These recordings represent the Anjuna Jam Band in the winter season of 1977/78, which was a particularly good season, and one of the peak seasons of the 1970s!
The album consists of extremely rare live recordings. This is the first time music from the band is being officially released after all these years.
Goa Gil (Kode IV/ The Nommos), one of the band leaders, later became an icon and probably the most respected and influential psytrance DJ in the world. With him in the spotlight was Eight Finger Eddie. The two are brand names and legends of The Goa Scene.
The album serves as a time machine, inviting listeners to relive an era that forever transformed rock and roll, shaped the cultural landscape, and embodies the raw energy and boundless creativity that defined the music during this epoch. These tracks propel listeners on an extraordinary auditory journey, seamlessly merging the psychedelic sounds of the era with contemporary sensibilities, resulting in an experience that bridges the gap between the past and the present. With its evocative lyrics, impassioned vocals, and masterful musicianship, the album paints a vivid picture of the freedom, rebellion, and love that defined the counterculture phenomena, the music channels that feel and draw a lively, diverse crowd looking to soak up the historic hippie vibe.
The album is a testament to the enduring spirit from the heyday of San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district, where the hippie revolution was in full swing, and captures the essence of a bygone era, when music served as a catalyst for social change and exploration.
It draws inspiration from the mystical vibes of Goa, a coastal region in India that became a spiritual heaven for many seeking enlightenment and transcendence during the ’70s.
This album is an opportunity to embark on this sonic pilgrimage and rediscover the magic of the ’70s, and in Goa in particular.
